Meizu M2 Note: new low-cost option

Inspired by Sony, Meizu finally introduced a successor to a popular M1 Note. Meizu M2 Note has a FullHD display, 8-core processor and pressure sensitive home button and to a large extent is just a slightly modified version of M1 note.

Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Meizu always emphasized a good value for the price and sleek design. The new M2 Note has specifications which put more at the lower middle end of the market. Expect for an improved display, the rest of the hardware haven’t seen too much of an upgrade from the M1.

The new model has 5.5” IPS IGZO display, the same as his predecessor, but the resolution is bumped up to FullHD (1920 x 1080 pixels). The heart of the beast is an 8-core 64bit Mediatek MT6753 clocked at 1.3 GHz (M1 ran at 1.7 GHz). This is basically a version of the MT6752 found in the predecessor. The graphics are processed by Mali-720 (downgraded from Mali T760) graphical accelerator with a help of 2GB of DDR3 memory. You can choose from 16GB or 32GB variant, both of which are extendable by microSD card (up to 128 GB).

A lot of concern has been raised over the Antutu benchmarks. The phone scores just a slightly less than 32,000 points. Not too much considering that M1 scored over 40,000 points.

The slot from microSD card has an additional functionality which you might not expect. It can also serve as a second SIM card slot. Having the ability to use two SIM cards can be quite handy, but I’m not so sure that sacrificing a microSD slot is worth it. After all, there are a lot of mobile phones which offer 2 dedicated SIM card slots and microSD slot at the same time.

M2 Note has 13Mpx, f/2.2 rear camera with LED diode coupled with a wide-angle front-facing camera. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 5Mpx and f/2.0.

As far as connectivity goes, you can connect using Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n) or LTE. You also get a Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS.

The phone is shipping with a 3 100 mAh battery and Android 5.0 Lollipop with a custom user interface called Flyme OS. Price is set at 799 Yuan which would make it a very affordable device but the performance issues might be a large turn off for many of potential buyers.
